Immersion Wort Chiller
£55.00More information
When you have successfully achieved the hot break the wort clears as proteins coagulate, fall out of solution and become visible as trub. If the wort is allowed to cool slowly these proteins go back into solution and the wort will go cloudy. If however it is chilled quickly a further large quantity of trub is formed and the wort will remain clear. This is called the cold break. Using this chiller a good cold break can be achieved, the time taken to complete the brewing process is reduced, and the yeast can be pitched in earlier to shorten the dangerous lag period before fermentation starts.
The Immersion Wort Cooler comes with both inlet and outlet tubing for the water. These are quality clear braided thick walled polythene, each 1.25m long with an ID of 10mm and an OD of 16mm. These will push fit onto the inlet and outlet of the copper tubing (you may want to secure them with jubilee type clips (not supplied)) and the water outlet runs free. The water inlet end will need to be secured to a tap with a suitable connector depending on the tap used to supply it. -
Lauter Tun
£45.00More information
Lautering is the process in brewing in which the mash is separated into the sugary wort and the residual grain. This is commonly achieved with a Lauter Tun.
This example is of 30 litre capacity and is fitted with a 31cm diameter False Bottom made from high quality perforated, domed stainless steel. In the centre is a stainless steel elbow with a barbed hose fitting to draw the wort from beneath the dome. One end of a length of hose is fitted to this elbow, the other end is connected to the back of the tap.
After mashout, that is raising the mash temperature to stop the enzyme reactions and to make the mash bed more fluid, the mash is transfered to the Lauter Tun.
The runnings initially drawn from the tap at the bottom are usually cloudy and these are recirculated by pouring them back onto the grain bed until they run clear.
At this point sparging can be started. This is the process of trickling hot water on top of the grain whilst extracting the sugary wort through the tap at the bottom. -
